I have been photographing as long as I have been traveling. Photography brings all my varied experience together in a single moment, utilizing my training as a journalist as well as my work in television, where I spent countless hours sitting alongside the camera with directors, discussing the framing and lighting of scenes. I learned a lot from the many talented directors and cinematographers with whom I worked, and eventually I began to apply that knowledge to my own scenes through the lens of a still camera.
I am fortunate to be able to claim two exceptional photographers as both family and dear friends – my cousin-by-marriage Joan Liftin and her late husband, Charles Harbutt. They have encouraged my photography and shared their craft and experience freely and generously with me.
Perhaps the most important thing I learned from Joan and Charlie is that your camera should always be with you, particularly if you want to capture Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive moment.”
